This candle holder was made at the end of the 19th century in the style of the 17th century. The two candleholders flank a two-headed eagle. The candle holder is made of brass. This is an alloy, a mixture, of copper and zinc. The addition of zinc makes copper harder. Brass was already used in prehistoric times, the metal zinc is much newer because it requires methods that did not exist at the time. Brass can be processed in various ways, such as by sawing, milling, rolling or welding.

In Greek mythology, the eagle was associated with the supreme god Zeus and the animal is a symbol of authority and leadership. In other cultures, the eagle was admired for flying high and thus seen as a symbol of the sun and messenger of the gods. The eagle, one or two headed, is often found in heraldry. Two-headed eagles came and come in the arms of various countries, such as that of Austria when it was an empire in the 19th century, but also today in Albania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro.
