Willem Witjens

Painting: ‘Castillo Santa Clara’ by Willem Witjens.

Willem Witjens (Den Bosch 1884-Den Bosch 1962) starts his career as glass worker. Later on he can focus on painting. During 1915-1917 he receives a royal subsidy. He also participates in the restauration of the Royal Palace at the Lange Voorhout in The Hague. He trains other painters and is a member of different art societies. He travels to e.g. the USA, Canada and different European countries for practice. Witjens painted this painting (oil on board) during his stay in Spain. At the back there is memo: “Castillo Santa Clara Torremolinos Malaga Dec. 1954.” Furthermore it says ‘VIII’ and: “Het Oude Huis’ Berne Post Heusden Holland’. This refers to the house he moved into in 1941: is is part of the medieval abbey of Berne (Bern, north west of Den Bosch) during the Middle Ages. The painting seems to be in the (slightly damaged) original frame. Signed and dated: ‘Willem Witjens Torremolinos 1954’.
