This painting depicts Gerrit Jan (1885-1965) and Johan (1892-68) Nijland. These merchant brothers were known in Overdinkel (Overijssel province) and surroundings under the names Prik and Prak. Photographer Roel Echtermeijer made photo’s of the brothers in the 1950s which were then used for advertisements. This painting is made after one of these photo’s that was actually published in different Twente newspapers among which Tubantia. The signature ‘CE’ suggests the painter being family of the photographer.
