Tilley: The “Guardsman”

Ref: 1810080.

In another object story, “Tilley: the Ambassador”, you’ll find the history of the Tilley family company that started in 1818 and had become world famous after World War One. Also this object is a so called Tilley ‘pressure lamp’. It concerns the “Model X246 Storm Lantern” named “The Guardsman” according to the Tilley 1954 catalogue. This object seems to be one of the first series of lamps produced, made before 1954. The lamp could burn 12 hours at 1.5 pints of kerosine. And not only that: it was ‘Completely Stormproof’ and “300 Candle Power”, according to the catalogue. This object doesn’t burn on lamp oil anymore as it has been rebuild to electricity. It now sustainably lights a LED candle. It is quite special that the glass shade, the ‘globe’ according to the catalogue mentioned before, is still original and carries the Tilley stamp (top left at the picture). The structure itself as well as the enamelled hood were quite rusty: they are treated and sprayed anthracite in a hammering manner.
