Cheese bell jar

Making cheese is one of the ways to make dairy last longer. There are theories that this has been done for many thousands of years. In the seventeenth century, the Netherlands became known abroad as a cheese country due to large-scale exports. The humid lowlands were very suitable for keeping dairy cattle and cheese was made on farms.

A cheese bell jar serves at the luxury table for covering and protecting cheese for flies and other insects. Paintings show pieces of cheese as a luxury product, sometimes covered with a bell jar. In literature, the cheese bell is also used as a metaphor, for example in venting criticism of seclusion and introverted politics in The Hague.

This is a mouth-blown green glass cheese bell jar. The handle shows small tool scratches and several small bubbles can be seen all over the jar. It has a diameter of between 18.5 and 19 cm and the height is approximately 18 cm.
