Ref: 1904200.
This wooden childrens chair was build early in the 20th century in the factory of the Naether family in Zeitz, about 30 km south of Leipzig. Ernst Albert Naether (1825-1894) is now seen as the founder of the production of childrens trolleys and chairs. He started his company around 1850 and until the end of the second world war it was market leader. And this is quite special as by 1875 there were up to 13 different companies in the same field. Zeitz was also called the childrens’ chairs capital of the world. In 1946 Naether became part of ZeKiWa, ZeitzerKinderWagenfabrik.
This chair dates from the first or second decade of the 20th century, as said. The lacquer shows beautiful craquelé. At the time, products like these were made only for the richest. This chair could be used in two different ways: in an upright position as well as in unfolded position. The first, generally, is to eat, the second to play. The simple mechanism still functions brightfully today: the cast iron wheels allow the chair to be rolled. The beads and the picture at the top are endearing. At the bottom of the seat, a baby pot could be hung. The chair now shows some signs of use as can be seen at the photo’s.
